Plugins :: Blog :: OpenID client released for Moodle

February 14, 2007

Thanks to Kevin Jardine for releasing an early version of his OpenID work for Moodle. You can download the OpenID client from the file repository on this plugins community.

This work is all part of an effort by the Elgg team and Kevin to create integration across applications. We are working on the Elgg OpenID client and Server, Kevin is also building out OpenID capabilities for Drupal. Combine that with Elgg's MediaWiki integration, single log on and log off across apps and very shortly this will be a powerful set of tools from which users can select the components they want.

You can check out an early version of Elgg / Drupal integration here

Note: this work should be treated as proof-of-concept. If you would like to get involved with developments please get in touch with Kevin or myself.

  1. David,

    A friend of mine who is a great php programmer just built a social network using drupal and showed me a bunch of other examples as well. Being a lover of drupal he wondered and asked why I just didn't use drupal for mine. Well I didn't know it could do that for one.

    I have spent a few hours looking into it now and it seem to do everything elgg does, tag searching and clouds included. However, figuring out how to put it together to do that probably takes quite a bit longer than installing elgg because drupal does so many things and you have to put it together piece by little piece. On the other hand, having been around a lot longer than elgg it has much more mature core code and mods like its forum etc. and much larger development and user community.

    Anyway, what I'm getting at is, I figure you probably have some insight as to what elgg has to offer that drupal doesn't or what it does better than drupal? I ask because I'm trying to get his help with development and first we have to get past the discussion about why elgg.

    I appreciate your thoughts on this, or anyones really.

  2. Edward;

     I'm in a similar situation where I'm trying to build out some social networks and am trying to decide what system to use.  I think you hit the nail on the head - Elgg installs pretty easily and has a lot of the social networking stuff already in it, and while Drupal might work, it's not going to be too easy to get it flushed out to a full fledged social networking platform.
