Plugins :: Blog :: How to change text in toolbar buttons?

March 13, 2007

It's so exciting to see so much enthusiasm around elgg and the sharing of so many great plugins.  I feel this really ramped up since the recent move to elgg.org for the user/developer community.

With so many great plugins that place a button in the toolbar, real estate up there can be pretty tight and I'm not sure how scaleable ultimately the toolbar will be as elgg becomes even more fully featured.

This is something for the big guys to think about longer term in terms of navigation, but in the short term:

How does one change the text in the buttons, say for example, if one wanted to take the word "Your" out of each of them.  This would free up significant space.

  1. did this come up before? i think it's in the mod/toolbar/lib or also the individual lib for each mod (or both)...

btw, what happens if you have too many toolbar items!? i've used the folio wiki plugin config file to disable dashboard on my site, might also disable something else if it gets too cluttered! but will it break the css if it runs over to the far, far right?

  2. They are in the individual module lib.php files.  I took out the Your and conserved about 40% of the space.  I also installed the folio plugin and disabled the dashboard button, which is not necessary given folio's activity button.

Yes, if you have too many buttons the Admin links will wrap down a line but will  not be visible because the toolbar remains a constant height.  This is relevant for users who are on the smaller end of screen resolution.

  3. i disabled the same dashboard button! i was gonna wait until down the road when there's some serious widgety goodness to throw it back up as "widgets" instead of 'dashboard'

...of course my only concern with this approach is that in future updates to those mods, you're gonna have to go back and change it all...

now i know why people use those nifty text editors like notae (for mac) to keep track of this stuff!

  4. btw, i know i'm ignoring my own 'tweaking elgg' wiki, but which file did you edit to actually add a new link to the toolbar? could it be done from the folio plugin (todd or nathan) - seems that if folio can handle commenting out, it could be perfect for 'adding in items', perhaps even as a tiny separate plugin called 'toolbarmanager' (to add and remove items only)....

  5. I would like to also know which file you tweaked to comment out and add in items.
