I am beginning to see Elgg as my best hope for my social network and so now I am looking at what I would want improved. So I wanted to share my ideas of how to improve in hopes of inspiring other's to share their ideas, especially those of the founders and key developers. From there I hope to get a clearer picture of where Elgg is going and how well that relates to my plans. And also get some idea how I can best contribute to helping it get there.
My main are of interest is in the organization of long lists of communities and long lists of forum topics within those. My experience using Elgg here at elgg.org and also at rucku.com is that it is hard to find what I am looking for. There are basically two way to find the post I am looking for. One is to search the whole site and hope that whoever made the post bothered to enter in some keywords so I can find it. The second is to drill down the forum. Only the drill down is only two tiered. there is the list of communities and the list of topics in that community forum. As soon as you have a bunch of communities the list becomes chaotic and time consuming to navigate. Then once in a community as soon as there are more than a handful of topics they start dropping to the next page. Then the only way to find what your looking for is to go through the pages one by one and read the description of each topic and poke in on the ones that seem relevant.
I think it would be best if admin could organize Communities into groupings and community leaders could do the same with forums. As far as commuities go perhaps it would work well for admin to create a list of main groupings and a list of subgroupings for each group. Then when anyone goes to create a community they have to choose from one of the main groupings and then a subgrouping from within that. Then they name their community. Then within the community forums they get to create those two lists and then anyone who starts a topic would have to chose from those list before starting a topic. Now anyone browing communities would be able to browse it like a directory instead of a long list and the same with the forums.
Perhaps some of this is there and I just havn't seen it. I haven't got my installation of the forum functional yet.
Please share your thoughts.
