Private Messages
From Elgg Documentation
This is some "user support" documentation that i put together for the use of Diego's Private Messages PlugIn. If you are using it on your site, simply replace "[THIS SITE] with your site name.
Currently it refers to version 1.2 features.
Private Messages – Powerful and with Privacy Controls.
[THIS SITE] makes use of a special software module that allows for registered site users to send ‘private messages’ to one another or to communities you’ve joined without displaying anybody’s real email address – you only see a UserName.
Messages to Individuals:
To send a private message to an individual, you and that individual must be already connected as Friends on [THIS SITE]. This prevents the kind of spam that sites like MySpace are seeing every day.
Most users allow anybody to add them as a Friend, but some users have set their profiles to require approval.
Once a user appears in your Friends list (viewable by clicking ‘Your Network’ from the top toolbar menu), you can send that person a message.
To send a message: simply click “Your Messages” from the top menu toolbar. Select “Compose” and in the “To:” field you will see a drop down menu that includes the UserNames of all of your friends. It’s that easy.
The Private Messaging function allows for you to send formatted messages including all sorts of HTML and decorative code if you’re into that, though most people tend to just type plain text with an occasional bold or italic item.
Messages to Communities:
If you belong to a community on this site, you may also send a message to all members of that community simultaneously by selecting the name of the Community from the same drop down list.
This is a very powerful ‘mass messaging feature’ – please do not abuse it or you will likely be blocked or kicked out of the community over time!
,br>
At [THIS SITE], we strongly suggest not sending messages to an entire community unless the community is very small and private already. If your message is intended to reach a larger audience, simply post a Blog entry within the Community’s blog.
