License

From Elgg Documentation

Elgg is released under the GNU Public License, version 2. In a nutshell, this means that we are agreeing to release Elgg and its source code to the community, who can use it for free. Users can make modifications as long as they make the source code available under the same license - in other words, you must share any advancements back with the community. In this way both users and software benefit; the software because many developers are working on features, and users reap the benefits of a whole community working together. The open source model means that bugs and potential problems are identified and patched quickly.

We do not believe that one size fits all, and the open source model allows organisations with similar requirements to collaborate with features and modifications.
