I originally mentioned this as part of an issue with community access controls. This has now been fixed but this error still remains.

And ideas?

When I go to a community then to its blog I get a strange system message. It is either 'b' or 'A'. Sometimes just one line and sometimes three times? (I am at rev 1130).

Hi

I was trying to install it for a test drive, But I am getting the following error

Warning: main(): open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/home/vhosts/bed-sheet-set.com/httpdocs/lib/cache/lib.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/httpd/vhosts/bed-sheet-set.com/httpdocs:/tmp) in /home/httpd/vhosts/bed-sheet-set.com/httpdocs/elgg/includes.php on line 78

Hello everyone, I'm hoping that someone can find and answer to my question. I recently installed Elgg, and have been pretty impressed with it - once I got the gist of it. However now that the site seems ready to take on the task intended for it, the registration, invitation and deleting users has a slight beauty flaw. It does add the users, but when the script is supposed to direct the new user to the page that informs that registration is completed, it gets stuck and displays one of these error messages:

 Through invitation and registration form:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/sebastyn/public_html/thewibe/mod/profile_photo/lib.php on line 15

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/sebastyn/public_html/thewibe/mod/profile_photo/lib.php:15) in /home/sebastyn/public_html/thewibe/units/invite/invite_actions.php on line 149

Deleting an account results to an error message as such:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/sebastyn/public_html/thewibe/mod/profile/lib.php on line 349

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/sebastyn/public_html/thewibe/mod/profile/lib.php:349) in /home/sebastyn/public_html/thewibe/units/users/userdetails_actions.php on line 31

When I return to any page within the site I get the appropriate message about the function being executed. Any ideas?

Please tell me if i am missing a trick here but... when people add friends here on elgg.org there is no confirmation needed from the new friend... can the friend request be made to get confirmation from this new friend? the reason i ask is that i am worried about spamming using the messaging plugin

Hi @all,

I think I've scanned all topics now and not found a response to this question although it seems so obvious to me ... Strange ...

Where is "{{menu}} defined?

I'm seeing these references in brackets all over the place in the elgg sourcecode, but I can't -- for the heck of it -- find the place where those are defined. They're placeholders, variables, right? Where can I control what it expands to when it's being parsed?

Any pointers will be welcome. Cheers

Jochen

I could've sworn I saw this somewhere but now cannot find the place to go to delete a user or a community. Am I mssing something completely obvious? Logged in as "news" with the very latest SVN build.

Any help pointing out the obvious to me would be, er, um, helpful

The administration panel can't write to the theme. You will need to edit your theme files directly or specify that /mysite/Elgg/mod/template/templates/Default_Template/ is world-writable.

However-- these files are all set to chmod777.  Am I missing something?

I have read down through the last few months and haven't found similar errors.

I have the most recent version of Elgg running on a php 5.1 Apache server served by Dreamhost. I am just trying to set this up on my dreamhost account to see if it will suit my needs--if it does then I will set it up on a seperate site but I want to test it out first.

The install ran, had some errors which I worked out, and I can see the main profile page for News (I haven't even gotten around to creating another user yet.)  It is obvious from the plain text/html black and white with blue and purple links that it is not accessing the .css at all.  When I try to click on any of the editing links I either get an error (similar to the one that follows--only the file name is different depending on what has been clicked) or there is no change.  This includes uploading an icon (it is there in the icon directory on the server, just not showing on the page), changing the template, and trying to add a blog entry or any otherr information.  It seems to me that this is a single problem manifesting itself in each area.

The data file is working properly (and being written to) and all the files are set to chmod 777.

The following is a sample of the error I am getting:

The requested URL /mysite.com/elgg/profile/index.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I can login to the admin page but cannot log in as news, password. Get " Unrecognised username or password. The system could not log you on, or you may not have activated your account.".

The install went fine w/o errors, created a fresh database, populated it. I can login to the admin page and edit settings there, just not the regular login page.

Hello,

I've been looking for a tool to allow us run a community website and I found your system. It looks great and very interesting but I found not so easy to register.

1st- tried to register and noticed welcome email never reached my inbox. After ask to our admins they said message is blocked because our system check if is a real email address possible to reply. Well not good but ...

2nd- we whitelisted your domain and tried to recover confirmation email, but you don't allow it! There is no way to receive again confirmation message.

3rd- I registered with another email address and when it asked me to enter password I noticed is possible to change user login and get the old one. Not seems too reasonable. System checks if changed user already exist? Why allow edit it?

4th- Then tried to post this question and is really hard to know what is a forum here, where is the whole forums structure, to know where to post it and  how to do it.

Didn't continue with more checkings Cry Hope my experience helps to fix something I can't waste more time.

Has anyone run into any scalability issues with ELGG as the database increases size over time?

Are there proven methods for handling larger amounts of traffic and user?

Can load-balancing techniques be employed in the ELGG framework?

Thanks

Looking at the source code for my blog, this (bottom of post) seems to be the bit of the style code that dictates the content and order of items in the side bar. However, in the 'edit theme' text boxes all this is generated it seems by some sort of include {{sidebar}} and I cannot get at the included code, if that what it is, to alter the contents and ordering of the sidebar.

All I can find in the edit theme boxes is:

<ul><!-- open sidebar lists -->

{{sidebar}}

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hello all,

Decided to take Elgg for a test drive this evening...

Came across a stumbling block at the tail-end!

I'm not quite sure if this is a PHP 5 related issue...

and I glanced through the documentation but didn't

find anything close.

Error(s): received at the admin panel

I'm having a problem setting up elgg on an XP machine. I get the following error:

ERROR: Could not find or create a directory (/elgg_data//sessions)
ERROR: Could not find or create a directory (/elgg_data//cache)
ERROR: Could not find or create a directory (/elgg_data//cache)
ERROR: Could not find or create a directory (/elgg_data//cache)
ERROR: Could not find or create a directory (/elgg_data//temp)
Two things confuse me
 1. why are there 2 /'s after elgg_data.
 2. I assume this is something to do with permissions on the elgg_data folder however elgg has created the cache, temp and sessions folder.
Any one have any ideas.

Hi folks!

Wondering if anyone has successfully installed eLGG on IIS6.

I'm running W2k 03 with IIS6, mySQL 4.5, PHP 4.3 and ActivePerl. My server does not use the InetPub directory on Windows, instead I have the server configured with a 'nix structure (to allow CGI-bins etc). I have rarely had an issue installing a script, but am having some issues with eLGG.

Using the install utility, its not writing to the DB or the config file. Config.php is set to full write priveliges. Data dir is outside the script root and writable. After completeing the form and hitting the "save" button, I get a blank page.

Install root and data root are set to c:/webroot/full_path_to_dir

After manually configuring the config.php file  and saving it, all I see on the _elggadmin/index.php page is the numeral 1

On the site's index page, all I see is this:
1

Elgg isn't ready to run. :(

 • Configuration problem: The PHP setting 'register_globals', which is a huge security risk, is turned on. There should be a line in the .htaccess file as follows: php_flag register_globals off If the line is present but has a # at the start, remove the # character.
Editing the .htaccess file as instructed doesn't seem to change this error message.

So, am I hopelessly banging my head against a brick wall, or should I be able to install eLGG on my server?

Thanks everyone!

Hi,

I get the following strange errors, and can not seem to find a way around..

Deleting a community produces a page with the following errors:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/path_to/elgg/mod/profile/lib.php on line 349

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/path_to/elgg/mod/profile/lib.php:349) in /home/path_to/elgg/mod/community/lib/communities_actions.php on line 111

Please note: the community is being deleted - but an error page is not very elegant..

After accepting the registration and going to _invite/join.php?invitecode, clicking the button to create the account produces:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/path_to/elgg/mod/profile_photo/lib.php on line 15

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/path_to/elgg/mod/profile_photo/lib.php:15) in /home/path_to/elgg/units/invite/invite_actions.php on line 149

As in the case with the community deletion, an account is being created OK, but does it have to be with an error page..?

I have tried to re-install elgg, but this didn't help..

Any ideas..?

Thanks!

I've tried creating an RPM to install Elgg on Fedora 7, but it might work for older Fedoras and RHEL/Centos too.

http://www.alia.org.uk/~sven/rpm/elgg-0.7-1.fc7.noarch.rpm

No guarantees.

(I've tried submitting it to the Fedora project, but nothing's happened yet. This is also why it installs its files in strange places - to comply with their process.)

How about modifying the code such that it uses english version of tinymce when there is a problem in locale?

Just a heads-up to the moderator of this forum: spammers have invaded the file storage section: http://elgg.org/admin/files/

Before removing these files, I would like to take this opportunity to bring up an issue: is there a way to know which user uploaded which file? The info is there in the database, but does the administrator have an interface to this information somewhere?

I'm going to be purchasing a new hosting account specifically dedicated to an Elgg site.  I've been working with it in a sandbox environment on a few hosts I already work with, and have found certain issues with each host that have prevented Elgg from working fully and properly (certain host limitations, lack of proper permissions, etc).

So, before I jump right in with a new account, I was just wondering if someone could recommend a solid, cost-effective hosting service that works well with Elgg.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

I am in the process of migrating from v0.6 to v0.8 as well as moving to a properly managed server. As part of this I am using LDAP to authenticate users into ELGG. This all works fine.

However we are required to use https for all login pages that work with users in our active directory.

I was considering fiddling with the settings to ensure all login screens in ELGG are only delivered over https - or alternatively I'll move the whole ELGG onto https.

Has anyone tried similar?

Is there any reason why usernames should not be more than 12 characters?  I have found where to change the limit (admin_actions.php, line 127).  The username field in the database is set to varchar(128), so why the limit of 12?  I have users who would exceed this, is it safe to modify line 127 to read:

if (!preg_match("/^[A-Za-z0-9]{3,25}$/",$new_username[$i])) {
that way I could have usernames upto 25 characters in length.

The school I work for has a senior program called Walkabout, it basically forces the seniors out of the classroom and into full-time internships outside of the school (a good portion of the students even leave the country), and we're planning on using Elgg to help the students keep online journals, and participate in group discussion despite their physical absence.

We generally group students into advisories and figured that a community for each advisory would be best, but we would like to lock students into communities so that they don't accidentally leave the community.

Is there an easy way to apply some form of "community lock-down" on some communities, but leave it open for students to form their own communities which they can join and leave on their own?

I couldn't use the visual installation for some reason, due to whenever I hit save it'd just go to a blank screen and never change anything. I've got it installed and a lot of the other issues worked out, but when I go to the _elggadmin section, it goes right into the admin panal without asking for a username or password, is this normal? Also it doesn't seem to be using the templates, unless it's just suppose to be all white and the login stuff kind of scattered?

Hi all,

Sorry to ask such a basic question. I'm in the midst of installing. I keep getting the message...

Before you use the admin panel, you will need to add the following code to Elgg's config.php:

...when I try to access admin. I have inserted the code suggested to the config.php:

$CFG->adminuser = '';
$CFG->adminpassword = '';

...and when that hasn't worked, I've put data in between the ''. But nothing seems to change!

Any ideas? I've been trying all day here but can't seem to get anywhere.

Thanks for your advice folks, and sorry to be such a dummy - learning from scratch here.

John

Well - I now seem to have got past that hurdle, only to find this when I try to open ELGG itself from my site - www.brainpark.co.uk/elgg-0.7/

I get the following error message:

Warning: main(/home/brainpa/public_html/elgg-0.7/lib/datalib.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/brainpa/public_html/elgg-0.7/includes.php on line 79

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/brainpa/public_html/elgg-0.7/lib/datalib.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/brainpa/public_html/elgg-0.7/includes.php on line 79

Any ideas folks?

Thanks

John
